That was quick! This coming weekend marks the last of the summer (kind of).
Luckily, we still have many weekends of great Highland Games and events left in North America!
Labor Day weekend brings the Capital District Scottish Games in Altamont, NY. I’ll be there along with my girl, Miss September, Coreyanne! Find us and pick up your calendar! Tweet me at @whiskyandtartan!
Competing pipe bands include: Schenectady, Scotia-Glenville, Mohawk Valley Frasers, St. Columcille United Gaelic, Catamount, the Rhode Island Highlanders, Ulster Scottish, and more!
In Canada, stop by the Canmore Highland Games in Alberta. Thrill to the sounds of the pipes in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains! The Highland Dance competition runs all day long, and you are able to see the competition as it unfolds. Dancers may also be seen in the Official Opening Ceremonies as they participate in the Massed Fling, to the immense enjoyment of those in attendance.
Over on the west coast, it’s the 151st San Francisco Scottish Games in Pleasanton. Albannach will be there beating on their drums, along with Skerryvore who is mid-way through their U.S. tour on their way to the NH Highland Games in a few weeks.
Be sure to check out the Friday night concert featuring the LA Scots Pipe Band. More than 30 pipe bands will play together at the end of each day in the Massed Bands show in front of the Grandstand. More than 750 pipers and drummers will march in formation and play inspirational Scottish music, including "Scotland the Brave, "Amazing Grace", and "Salute to the Chief" ("Highland Laddie”).
'Whisky Live' at the Scottish Highland Gathering and Games in Pleasanton has become more popular each year with approximately 2,000 attendees participating in 2014. This fun and informative whisky tasting event typically offers over 100 different whiskies including Scotch Whisky, Irish Whiskey, American and International Brands which may be accompanied by fine cigar tasting (smoking area outside the Tasting Building), as well as the opportunity for samples of Belhaven Scottish Beer, a favourite of ours at NYC Tartan Week. In addition to whisky tasting, Master Classes offers the opportunity to participate with a Brand Ambassador in sampling single malt whiskies from the different Distilling areas in Scotland, hear about the distilling process and ask questions of the experts. There will be two or three classes offered over the Games weekend.
There are also events going on in Washington State, Wisconsin and Virginia. Check out the W&T Events Calendar for all details!
