Jason was chosen for the month of July due to a horrific crash in 2009 where his hook and ladder truck overturned. The truck was responding to an emergency call at the time of the wreck. He most certainly could have died, and we're very glad he didn't. Watch a video about the incident here:
Jason is one funny guy. He and PM Joe Brady had me laughing the entire afternoon of the shoot. Near the end of the afternoon, we hit the band's local pub, Tir Na Nog in Raleigh, for a cold cider, where there is a display case of awards and novelties of the band proudly featured on the wall. Jason also has the band logo 'FOF' (For Our Fallen) tattooed on his arm.
Here’s Jason doing his thing, you know, saving dogs and putting out fires. What a guy!
Says Pipe Major and Founding Member Joe Brady, “Our goal remains steadfast - to provide a distinguished tribute “FOR OUR FALLEN” comrades – and to be of service to the family, friends and co-workers of public safety employees of Raleigh, Wake County and all those who serve and protect in the State of North Carolina. We desire to strengthen relations between the protective services and the public and to preserve cultural heritage and enrich our community by providing traditional Bagpipe and Drum music.”
Band members continue to work together to accomplish common goals, both on the field and off. While they focus on their goals in competition, they always recognize their duty within the community to be of service and perpetuate the art form.
The first Saturday in May marks the North Carolina Fallen Firefighters Memorial and March. The event honors fallen firefighters from across the state. W&D has the distinct privilege to march side by side with their fellow public safety pipes and drums from across the state to honor their fallen – and their families.
The band also participates in all graduation and promotional services for the Raleigh Police and Fire departments. On a national level, band members have participated in the National Peace Officers Memorial in Washington D.C. each May -- as well as the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation memorial each October.
The band has an incredible social media presence and are very active on Twitter, Facebookand Instagram. Be sure to follow them and say hello!
I'm so proud to have Wake and District in the 2016 NAPB Calendar!
