Well, it’s been a long and seriously incredible NY Tartan Week.
Saw lots of existing friends and made tons of new ones. That in and of itself makes for a successful time.
The day my faerie arrived we hit the ground running, visiting some NY landmarks and ending up at the Highland Divas show at the Metropolitan Room. Glad we went, because Jimmy Fallon himself jumped on the stage for the encore, joining the ladies in an interesting rendition of ‘Mustang Sally’ (you can see video on my Facebook page). I also had the pleasure of meeting Jackie McGuigan and Katrina Tweedie of Scotland Now – which was funny, because Catriona had seen them tweet a photo of themselves earlier and recognized them. It was the first of MANY times I’d meet up with them during the week.
Thursday was a great road trip out to the Hudson River Valley, where we explored little towns like Sugar Loaf and Warwick, and hit a few wineries to stock up.
Friday brought the beginning of the REAL madness. During the day we caught Scottish Octopus and Jenna Moynihan at Bryant Park for a lunchtime concert. Then wandered over to St. Andrews for a few pints before heading back to get ready for the Scot Street Style event, ‘The Gathering’. World Peace Tartan ambassador and piper Craig Weir accompanied us to the party, which was an amazing space to mingle and meet creatives in all areas. Putting real life faces to the beards I see on social media every day was loads of fun. Everyone was so pleasant and excited to be part of this event. Hats off to you, King G! Thank you for inviting me to be a part of your amazing vision!
Then came parade day, which is always bittersweet. You work so hard for this day, but you know it will fly by so quickly you’ll barely remember what happened. I feel like there were so many people I somehow missed in the whirlwind of tartan and tweed. The 'Outlanders United' group showed such energy and professionalism. So impressed with them and very happy with the turnout after almost a year and a half of courting!
The after-party was packed and full of people ready to let off some steam after all their hard work during the previous year. I again was able to hang out with all the people I’ve met over the years from Scotland and all over the world, new friends like Katt and Jackie, Paul from the Daily Record, my great friends from Syracuse Scottish Pipe Band and the rest of my musician friends from other bands. Way too many people to name, but feel free to give yourselves a shout out in the comments section! You certainly deserve it!
I will admit I am still at the point of utter exhaustion and my vocal chords are on siesta, but it was one amazing ride. I tend to call this the post-tartan depression period. It will pass soon and then Highland Games season begins!
Looking forward to catching the play ‘The Tailor of Inverness’ at 59E59 Theater on Friday with Amy Rew. Will post more about this amazing woman later.
I’ve posted loads of photos and videos on my Facebook and Instagram. I hope you enjoy them and hope even more you’ll join in the festivities in 2016!
